            When the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or SOCOM) began looking for a new Battle Rifle for their SOF forces to replace the M4 Rifle. They called the project the Special Forces Combat Assault Rifle, or SCAR for short. The SCAR is manufactured in two main versions:

            Light or SCAR-L, Mk 16 Mod 0 and Heavy or SCAR-H, Mk 17 Mod 0.

            The FN SCAR® 16S is one of three high-performance semi-automatic rifles manufactured by FN America, a U.S. subsidiary of Herstal, Belgium based gun company FN Herstal. The FN SCAR 16S is dubbed the "light" version, the other two FN SCAR semi-auto versions being the FN SCAR 17S (heavy) and FN SCAR MK20 SSR (available for military sale only.) Both the FN SCAR 16S and FN SCAR 17S are the civilian versions of the US Military's FN MK 16 and FN MK 17, respectively. The FN SCAR 16S is light, easy to handle and quick shooting. It is chambered in the 5.56x45mm caliber. Unique to the FN SCAR 16S is the cold hammer-forged MIL-SPEC, free-floating barrel with chrome-lined bore and chamber. Unlike other semi-auto rifles of its caliber, the FN SCAR 16S is fully ambidextrous, making it fast handling for either right or left-handed shooters and easy for any shooter to adopt any shooting position. With its MIL-STD 1913 optical rail and three rails, the FN SCAR 16S can easily be mounted with a variety of scopes, lasers and tactical lights. All variations of the 16S typically come with a fully adjustable, side-folding polymer stock for easy portability. Shooters have the option of choosing between matte black and Flat Dark Earth (FDE) versions of the FN SCAR 16S.
